Rain Storms and Windows in Simi Valley, CA

When you look for new windows, you want them to meet the needs of your Simi Valley home. That means they need to be long lasting, energy efficient, aesthetically pleasing and a number of other things. When you live in beautiful, sunny California, you are used to having nice weather most of the time. But there are times when rainstorms and other storms hit the area. Can your windows hold out? If you are replacing your windows as it is, it is a good time to think through the options.

Impact Windows

Windows that have impact glass have two panes that are bonded together with a clear plastic interlayer. A third pane is added to the inside with an airspace that helps with insulation. The laminated portion that faces outside is highly durable. It will resist anything that impacts it such as flying debris. Even if you don’t have rainstorms that cause debris, these windows can be helpful. Do you have kids or neighbors with kids that like to throw balls around? This type of glass will help resist balls and anything else that comes into contact with them. They are also highly secure because if anyone tries to break into your home, they won’t be able to break the glass very easily at all. It’s a great burglar deterrent. No baseballs, no bricks, no debris, nothing to worry about! You may even be able to lower your homeowner’s insurance premiums if you get windows with impact resistant glass.

Vinyl Windows

Since Simi Valley, CA gets plenty of rain throughout the years, it is smart to think about the windows materials you are choosing. Wood is beautiful, for sure, but have you ever seen wood hold up well against being wet for long periods of time? If you can keep up with the maintenance on the wood, it’s certainly a viable option. But with all the sun and rain in Simi Valley, CA, and your busy lifestyle, that can be a challenge. Instead, you might want to consider vinyl windows. This window material is highly popular because it is cost-effective and it requires little to no maintenance. You don’t have to worry about how much rain or sun it receives. It’ll still look great years down the road with no help from you.

There are plenty of items to think through when it comes time to put new windows in your home in Simi Valley, CA. While this isn’t a process you go through every day, the good news is, there are professionals who can help! Quality Windows has been serving the region for over 30 years. Casement Windows: Are they Energy Efficient?

If you are considering replacing the windows in your home in Moorpark, CA, you have a lot of styles and types to think through. You might need new windows if you notice drafts going through your home or if your energy bills are climbing with no explanation. Energy efficient windows can cut back on all of that, but you need to choose the right windows. Casement windows are often the best option you can buy.

What are Casement Windows like?

Casement windows are different from the more traditional double-hung windows. Double-hung windows slid up and down while casement windows operate on a crank and open outward with hinges on one side. The work well in hard to reach places, like over a kitchen sink, because you can reach the crank to open them easier.

Are they Energy Efficient?

Yes! Casement windows are highly energy efficient. When they are closed, the press against the frame harder when the California window blows. That reduces any possible air leaks to a virtual zero. Other than picture windows that don’t open at all, casement windows are the most efficient operating style you can buy.

What Else Makes them Efficient?

There are other items that relate to both casement windows and other window styles in order to add up to an energy efficient window. If you want casement windows that are as energy efficient as possible, make sure they include some of the following items.

Double or Triple Pane Glass

The glass itself is a poor insulator. That’s why windows with single pane glass waste so much energy. But the insulation increased by leaps and bounds when you add panes of glass and leave a small space of air or argon gas between the panes. Double pane glass is a ton better than single pane and triple pane glass is even better yet.

Gas Infills

Placing air between the panes of glass is a good insulator, but non-toxic gas like argon is even better. This gas is denser than air so it can slow heat transfer through the window even further.

Warm Edge Spacers

Double and triple pane windows require spacers in order to keep the panes a certain distance apart. This helps to maintain an airtight seal and prevents the infill from leaking and becoming ineffective. The warm edge spacers go around the window’s perimeter and have a low conductivity of heat transfer.

Low-Emissive Coatings

Low-emissive coatings, aka Low-E glass, is glass with a special coating that is made up of a thin layer of metal. You see the same view out the window as before, but the coating reflects any heat that tries to come into your house back out. In the winter, you keep the interior heat inside and in the summer, the exterior heat stays out. You also get UV ray protection so nothing in your home fades.

Casement windows are highly energy efficient window in Moonpark, CA and beneficial in a number of ways. If you are interested in this type of window or another style, call Quality Windows at

Spruce Up Your Windows for Spring in Santa Barbara, CA

During the extended months of winter, we spend a little too much time indoors. If you and your kids are suffering from cabin fever, there are plenty of things you can do to brighten up your space and prepare for spring. A lot of these fun projects involve your windows, as long as they are lead-free and energy efficient. Just grab a few simple craft supplies and you can spruce up just in time for spring. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Window Paint

This is a simple, fun way to decorate for spring. There are plenty of products on the market now that are safe, not only for kids but also for your windows. You can find window crayons, window markers, and even window paint. The products will not stain or scratch the glass and will give your children hours of entertainment while they paint the sky or yard full of flowers or superheroes. Clean up is easy, especially if you have vinyl windows. Use a mild detergent to wipe down the frames and a soft cloth to remove drawings. Then clean the glass with your usual cleaner and a lint free cloth or newspaper.

Sun Catchers

Another fun, easy project for kids are DIY sun catchers. There are several fun ways to make these, but the most common are with a little tissue paper, sheet protectors, and Modge Podge. Cut the tissue paper into small squares and cut the seams off the sheet protector so you have two separate sheets of plastic. Spread the Modge Podge and attach the tissue paper. Then, once the adhesive is dry, cut out your shapes, peel the decoupage tissue paper off the plastic, and use string to hang them up in the window.

Window Clings

Another simple, fun way to decorate your windows for spring is with pull and stick window clings. These temporary stickers are fun to place and move around. Best of all, they do absolutely nothing to harm your windows. Once you have had your fill, you can remove the decorations and store them for later or simply discard them.

Spring Cleaning: How to Clean, Inspect, and Maintain Your Windows

With the weather in Agoura Hills, CA getting markedly warmer, you have probably started thinking about Spring Cleaning. Open window season is on the way, and along with the sweeping and mopping, you will want to take extra care to thoroughly clean and inspect your windows. If something is amiss you should get replacement windows before the busy season strikes. Sparkling clean windows make a great impression—both inside and out. Here are some tools you will need and a few steps to follow to clean and maintain your windows this spring.

Tools for Window Cleaning

  • Soft, dry cloths
  • Dry towel
  • Sponge
  • Mild detergent
  • Generic class cleaner
  • Vacuum
  • Small, soft bristle brush
  • Plastic putty knife
  • Silicone lubricant

Do Not Use

  • Power washers
  • Abrasives or razor blades
  • Solvents or rubbing alcohol
  • Cleaners containing bleach
  • Furniture polish
  • Liquid grease removers

Step 1. Clean the Frame

Use a soft, wet cloth and your mild detergent to remove dirt from the frame and window ledge. Rinse with a different wet cloth and water, and immediately dry with your towel. You do not want water or cleaner to drip down into the tracks, so work quickly as you wash, rinse, and dry.

Step 2. Clean the Glass

Use your glass cleaner and another dry, lint-free cloth to wipe the glass surface of windows. If you notice streaking, rinse out your cloth with clear water before wiping again. You can also use newspapers for a streak-free clean. Again, do not let cleaner run down the window and into the track. And do not use razor blades or other abrasives to remove tough dirt, just soak the area and use a plastic putty knife until it comes free.

Step 3. Clean the Track or Hinges

First, use the vacuum to clear away loose dirt and debris. Then take your small brush, like a toothbrush, to the track and brush up any dirt that is stuck. Wipe the track down with a dry cloth. Then, spray your silicone lubricant into a cloth and rub it gently into the track. Do not spray directly into the track, or overspray might get in your freshly cleaned glass and frame. The same goes for all moving parts on casement, single-hung, double-hung, and awning windows.

Step 4. Clean the Screen

Next carefully remove the screens. Carry them into the shower or lay them on a flat surface outside. Then gently spray them down with water from the hose. You can also use a soft-bristle brush and mild detergent for tough dirt. Rinse with clear water and allow screens time to dry before reinstalling them.

Step 5. Perform the Inspection

While you are following the above steps, take extra caution while checking your windows. Look for cracks, leaks, mold, and condensation. You also want to watch for warping, scratches, rust, or pest infestation. If you feel a draft, see a crack or notice condensation between the panes of glass—you likely need replacement windows.

By taking the extra time, you might discover a few things you can’t fix or wipe away. And if you need us, we can help with Agoura Hills, CA replacement windows this spring. Preparing Your Home for New Windows

You made a good decision to replace the windows in your home. They will improve energy efficiency, eliminate drafts, and improve your home in Agoura Hills, CA. And when you hire a professional installation team the process can be quick and painless. You do not have to worry about the process for and the hard work of the installation itself. However, there are a few things you can do to prepare for the installation crew. These small steps will help save time so the professionals can get the job done faster.

Clear the Windows

The first place to start is with the window drapes, blinds, indoor shutters, and curtain rods. Also, take down the hooks and wall art in proximity. You do not want these items to get ruined, especially if you plan to use them again once your new windows are in place.

Make Room

Next, you want to move any furniture that is close to the windows. Removing old windows and installing new ones is an involved process. You want to make sure the team has enough room to work.

Clean the Outside

Just like the inside, installers need room on the outside as well. You will want to remove wet leaves, window decorations, and any outdoor furniture that could get in the way. The installation team will be careful to avoid your front flower beds as best they can, but if you are concerned you might think about transplanting flowers, just in case.

Create a Path

The installation process involves removing the old windows before installing the new ones. This means the team will be trekking back and forth between the truck and your home. If you are getting multiple windows replaced you want to give the crew a clear path. Do what you can to eliminate tripping hazards. Put away area rugs, cords, and children’s toys.

Make Outlets Accessible

This might not be something you would think about, but the installation team will appreciate you taking this extra step. They will likely need electricity to run their power tools, and if you make the outlets accessible their job is so much easier.

Cover Furniture and Floor

A professional installation team will likely take care if this step. However, it won’t hurt to call and check. Because of liability issues, they may not want you to use your own coverings. But, if it is alright with the installers, it won’t hurt to do what you can to cover furniture.

Grant Access

This is another thing that might hold up the installation process. You want to make sure the doors and windows of your home are unlocked and you have disabled the alarms. You will also want to make sure your indoor pets are secure and not underfoot.

Horizontal Sliders vs. Single-Hung and Double-Hung Vinyl Windows

Looking for new or replacement windows in Santa Barbara, CA?  Not all windows are the same. You have so many styles to choose from and finding the right one will affect the overall look and feel of your home, both inside and out. And it isn’t just a superficial choice. Different vinyl window styles provide different functions as well. That is why choosing the right one is so important. Two popular options in the area are horizontal sliders or single and double-hung vinyl windows.

Features of Horizontal Sliders

Also called sliding windows, these slides open horizontally along a track. Typically these vinyl windows are twice the size of single and double-hung and may feature muntins (gridlines that give the appearance of a divided pane without sacrificing efficiency). You can also choose to make one or both panes operable. These windows are a good choice if the width of the opening is larger than the height.

Benefits of Horizontal Sliders

Here are the advantages you get with these vinyl windows:

  • Better efficiency. These windows do not have a lot of moving parts and are easy to operate. As such, the horizontal sliders tend to have higher energy efficiency ratings than double hung windows. The tight seal will keep extreme heat out, which is great for areas like Santa Barbara, CA.
  • Easy cleaning and maintenance. If both sashes are operable, these windows are easy to clean. With the window open you can reach the outer surface to clean. And the vinyl material will not fade, chip, or scratch. So you do not have to worry about sanding and refinishing the surface as you do with wooden window frames.
  • Larger view. These windows are larger and wider than single and double-hung windows. As such, you get a more expansive view, allowing in the most natural light. These windows also open wider, for more ventilation.

Features of Single and Double-Hung

These windows operate by sliding vertically. A single-hung window has a fixed upper sash and a double-hung as two operable sashes. These windows can come with our without muntins, depending on the style you prefer.

Benefits of Single and Double-Hung

These are the advantages of these vinyl windows:

  • Great ventilation. Because both sashes open on double-hung windows you have the option of opening the top and bottom for improved ventilation. The warm air escapes out the top while the cool air comes in through the bottom, naturally cooling the air in your home.
  • More versatility. You can pair single and double-hung windows with other styles to create a unique window display in your home. You can use them for an intriguing bay window, or on either side of a picture window. You can even choose to have a whole wall of windows in a row to maximize your view.
  • Improved safety for kid’s rooms. Double-hung windows allow for the option of locking the bottom sash and opening just the top. Then you can allow fresh air inside, but also not risk your child falling out the open window.
  • Air conditioner friendly. Horizontal sliders are not efficient for window anchored air conditioners. Single-hung windows are great, but double-hung windows are ideal for this type of unit.
  • Easy cleaning and maintenance. Double-hung windows win out for vinyl windows Malibu, CA that are the easiest to clean. The design allows you to tilt both sashes in so you can clean the inside and outside surface without ever stepping outside. On the other hand, single hung vinyl windows are the most difficult to clean because the top sash does not tilt in.

Window Styles: Bay vs. Bow Vinyl Windows

Bay and Bow windows are striking, and also strikingly similar. Both window installations project outward and feature multiple windows. If you are thinking it might be time to add one of these beautiful installations to your home, here are the pros and cons to consider to help you make the right decision.

Bay Windows

These window units are comprised of three windows arranged as a single system that projects outward. The center window is generally much larger than the other two flanking windows. All three can be picture windows. Most often, though, the center window is a large picture window and the side windows are operable, either casement windows Oak Park, CA or double hung windows. The angular arrangement of these windows works well for more modern homes.

Bow Windows

These are made up of four to six windows arranged in a gentle, protruding arch shape. Like the bay window, these add more cubic feet to a room and make it feel larger. The elegant curve of these windows works best for Victorian style architecture. This type of installation is unique because it can wrap around building corners and turrets, giving you a wide view out of both sides of your home.

Why Choose Vinyl?

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is a construction level material with multiple purposes. Because it is a polymer, different additives combine to make each material unique. Most vinyl used for windows contains organic tin and titanium dioxide, along with other fillers, plasticizers, and pigments. These “ingredients” improve strength, energy efficiency, and prevent warping and fading. These are important features to have in Agoura Hills, CA.

Pros of Bay/Bow Windows

Here are the advantages of these vinyl windows:

  • Expansive view. Most people choose to install these windows to make a room feel larger and open up a beautiful view. These unique window units can easily provide both.
  • Natural light. Along with a greater view, you also get the advantage of more natural light to brighten up the space. Light can enter from several directions. As such, you want to make sure to choose energy efficient windows with the right glass coatings. Otherwise, these spaces will heat up fast in Agoura Hills, CA. This is why an energy efficient material, like vinyl, is so advantageous.
  • Added space. These literally add square footage to the inside of your home. It doesn’t just look bigger, it IS bigger. With the added space you can add a reading nook, a window seat, or even extra storage space to your room.
  • Increased value. These installations have a high return on your investment. They boost curb appeal and will certainly catch the attention of prospective buyers.
  • Ventilation. This isn’t true if you decide to use picture windows. But any other window styles you choose will increase ventilation and allow for air to enter the home, no matter which way the wind is blowing.

Cons of Bay/Bow Windows

Here are the disadvantages of these vinyl windows:

  • Hard to dress. Hanging curtain rods and drapes on bay and bow windows gets tricky. There often isn’t enough space to accommodate the hardware. So what are the alternatives? You might consider indoor plantation shutters installed inside the window frame. This will give you unmatched elegance, but also means you obstruct that amazing view and take up some of the added space your windows provide. The best option is usually Roman shades. These sleek window coverings fit inside the frame and easily roll up and out of sight.
  • Difficult to clean. This depends largely on the types of windows you choose for your installation. Because most feature picture windows, you will have to go outside to clean the exterior glass. However, if you choose double-hung windows, the glass will tilt inward for easy cleaning and maintenance.
  • Compromised structure. You absolutely want your new bay or bow window installed by a professional. If not these windows can develop structural problems. These windows units are heavy and must have proper support. Installers need to be sure the foundation will not settle once windows are installed. They also must use load bearing windows where necessary.
  • Cost. Because these units feature multiple windows and are a bit more complicated to install, bay and bow vinyl windows are more expensive.

Deciding Which Window Material is Best for Your Home

While searching for new windows for your Thousand Oak homes, you will quickly find that not all windows are created equal. Many windows vary on the type of glass, technology, and material that’s used to build them. Among these options, the material you choose may play the largest role in the efficiency of your window. If you are new to buying windows, you may not be able to tell the difference between materials right off the bat. To simplify the process we have created a short buying guide to some of the most popular window materials on the market:

Vinyl Windows: Vinyl windows are currently the most widely purchased window material in the country. The windows were originally introduced to the market in the early 70’s as a more affordable alternative. Since then the windows have not only continued to be a more economic option but have also earned a name for their energy efficient capabilities.

Fiberglass Windows: Fiberglass is known as a strong alternative for homeowners that love the look and feel of classic wood windows, but don’t enjoy the upkeep that typically comes with them. In addition to being aesthetically beautiful, fiberglass windows are also remarkably durable and are known for their long shelf life.

Aluminum Windows: Aluminum windows are most frequently used by designers and architects due to the fact that they are affordable and lightweight. The metal frames are reliably strong but do have the tendency to retain heat making them inconvenient for warmer climates.

Wooden Windows: Following vinyl windows, wooden windows are the second most popular window material on the market. While they may not be as durable as the other window materials on this list, homeowners love their natural tones and how easy they are to customize. Wooden windows come in a wide variety of species and colors and can easily be ordered to fit any window size. Unfortunately, they are also the most high maintenance material on the list, requiring regular sanding, peeling, and painting.

While each window material has their own list of benefits and disadvantages, it’s best to consider the personal needs of your home when selecting a material. Some homeowners would rather invest in the aesthetic nature of their home, while other homeowners lean towards energy efficient windows Ventura, CA or safety hardware. No matter your window preference, it’s always best to start off your window project by speaking to a window and door professional.  At Quality Windows, our team of experts is ready to answer any questions you may have while introducing you to a wide variety of models on our showroom floor.
