Casement Windows: Are they Energy Efficient?

June 12, 2017

If you are considering replacing the windows in your home in Moorpark, CA, you have a lot of styles and types to think through. You might need new windows if you notice drafts going through your home or if your energy bills are climbing with no explanation. Energy efficient windows can cut back on all of that, but you need to choose the right windows. Casement windows are often the best option you can buy.

What are Casement Windows like?

Casement windows are different from the more traditional double-hung windows. Double-hung windows slid up and down while casement windows operate on a crank and open outward with hinges on one side. The work well in hard to reach places, like over a kitchen sink, because you can reach the crank to open them easier.

Are they Energy Efficient?

Yes! Casement windows are highly energy efficient. When they are closed, the press against the frame harder when the California window blows. That reduces any possible air leaks to a virtual zero. Other than picture windows that don’t open at all, casement windows are the most efficient operating style you can buy.

What Else Makes them Efficient?

There are other items that relate to both casement windows and other window styles in order to add up to an energy efficient window. If you want casement windows that are as energy efficient as possible, make sure they include some of the following items.

Double or Triple Pane Glass

The glass itself is a poor insulator. That’s why windows with single pane glass waste so much energy. But the insulation increased by leaps and bounds when you add panes of glass and leave a small space of air or argon gas between the panes. Double pane glass is a ton better than single pane and triple pane glass is even better yet.

Gas Infills

Placing air between the panes of glass is a good insulator, but non-toxic gas like argon is even better. This gas is denser than air so it can slow heat transfer through the window even further.

Warm Edge Spacers

Double and triple pane windows require spacers in order to keep the panes a certain distance apart. This helps to maintain an airtight seal and prevents the infill from leaking and becoming ineffective. The warm edge spacers go around the window’s perimeter and have a low conductivity of heat transfer.

Low-Emissive Coatings

Low-emissive coatings, aka Low-E glass, is glass with a special coating that is made up of a thin layer of metal. You see the same view out the window as before, but the coating reflects any heat that tries to come into your house back out. In the winter, you keep the interior heat inside and in the summer, the exterior heat stays out. You also get UV ray protection so nothing in your home fades.

Casement windows are highly energy efficient window in Moonpark, CA and beneficial in a number of ways. If you are interested in this type of window or another style, call Quality Windows at
